About Us

The Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services (JICS) is an organ of the South African Government, whose mandate is to uphold and protect the rights of all inmates who are incarcerated. JICS is responsible for the independent oversight of the Department of Correctional Services and must therefore report thereon to the Ministry of Justice, Correctional Services and the portfolio committee.

The core function of JICS is:

  • To facilitate the inspection of correctional centres in order that the Inspecting Judge may report on the treatment of inmates in correctional centres and on conditions in correctional centres.

This Charter sets out the standard of service you can expect from the staff of JICS in the offices and at service points/correctional centers reporting under JICS.

This Charter does not cover services and professional functions provided by non-governmental and community level organizations.
